NUS Chancellor President Halimah Yacob graces the community event as the Guest-of-Honour and also launches the University’s 115th anniversary celebrations

Singapore, 11 January 2020 – The National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School’s annual flagship event, NUS Bizad Charity Run (BCR) 2020, kick-started the new year with more than 1,300 participants. The run was graced by President Halimah Yacob, who is also NUS Chancellor and an alumna of the University.

2020 marks a significant year for both NUS, as well as the NUS Business School Alumni Association (NUSBSA). BCR, which is in its 10th edition, was the launch event for NUS115, as the University celebrates its 115th anniversary this year. NUSBSA celebrates 20 years of uniting alumni and creating opportunities for both students and alumni.

This year’s event raised a record sum of over S$400,000 for multiple beneficiaries, including the NUSBSA Bursary Fund, NUS Business Student Support Fund and TOUCH Community Services – Elderly Care. TOUCH will receive S$30,000 to support programmes and services for the less privileged elderly in Singapore.

Themed “Stars” to inspire hope and celebration in the New Year, BCR 2020 consisted of two categories – a competitive 10 km run as well as a 5 km fun run. Both routes took participants through the University’s Kent Ridge campus, passing by familiar landmarks such as the Central Library and University Town.

Taking the helm as Chairman of BCR 2020 is Mr Chua Hung Meng, Vice President of NUSBSA and an alumnus of the NUS Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) programme. He said, “The NUS Bizad Charity Run is a great cause that not only helps the less privileged business undergraduates achieve their goals, but also supports a community beneficiary. I am pleased to be a mentor and to provide guidance to the student committee managing this special and meaningful project.”

“We are grateful for the support from the NUS Business School Alumni Association, and are heartened by the students’ enthusiasm in going beyond delivering meals to our seniors to raising funds for our work. It shows that the youths are engaged and that they care. We hope that more youths will be inspired to be on this journey to do good for society,” said Mr James Tan, Chief Executive Officer, TOUCH Community Services.

Student Project Director Mr Darren Tan said, “As part of the preparation for the NUS Bizad Charity Run 2020, my team and I had the opportunity to volunteer at TOUCH Community Services – Elderly Care. Seeing the joy in the seniors made our work much more meaningful. It is an honour to work alongside my teammates to organise such an important event that allows undergraduates such as myself to contribute back to society.”

Celebrating NUS’ 115th Anniversary

BCR 2020 is the first in a series of events that commemorates NUS’ 115th year of founding in 2020. As Singapore’s first institution of higher education institution, NUS has nurtured generations of leaders and luminaries in Singapore and Asia, who have contributed to the country and society. Themed “Shaping the Future”, NUS115 celebrates the University’s transformative impact over 115 years and its continual efforts in shaping the future for a better world. A series of signature events and initiatives will take place throughout 2020 to mark this special milestone.

A special highlight is the NUS115 Distinguished Speaker Series, a quarterly event which brings compelling speakers to NUS to share their unique perspectives on pressing issues of the future that affect our country, our region and the world. The series explores the overarching theme of “Shaping the Future”, which originates from the NUS Vision.
