JAKARTA, 28 November 2023The Centre for Governance and Sustainability (CGS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School, Singapore inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Centre for Environmental, Social, and Governance Studies (CESGS) at Airlangga Universitas, Indonesia to accelerate sustainability implementation in Indonesia and the Southeast Asia (SEA) region.

Under this MOU, CGS and CESGS will collaborate to advance sustainability efforts in the region, with a focus on Indonesia. The key areas of collaboration outlined in the MOU encompass research initiatives, knowledge exchange and development capacity-building programmes.

In research collaboration, CGS will participate in research projects proposed by CESGS, which aim to examine Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) performance within leading sustainable companies in Singapore and Indonesia. By deriving insights from these companies, recommendations and solutions will be developed to address sustainability challenges in Indonesia and the region. Additionally, this collaboration will enhance the international exposure of Indonesian sustainability researchers by providing joint authorship opportunities, leveraging NUS’ world-class research expertise.

To further advance sustainability research, the partnership will establish an efficient channel for knowledge exchange, facilitating the sharing of institutional reports, research findings, and academic materials. NUS Business School will gain access to CESGS’s extensive repository, which comprises over 8 million data points from more than 14,000 companies worldwide, bolstering the research capabilities of the school.

On the educational front, this partnership will facilitate cooperation in organising workshops, capacity-building programmes, research seminars, and conferences.

As capacity-building is key in driving sustainable development, NUS Business School and CESGS will launch a joint executive education programme on sustainability such as sustainable finance and ESG regulations. NUS Business School will also play a major role in designing comprehensive sustainability modules to revitalise the Accounting study programme at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Airlangga.

“NUS Business School is honoured to collaborate with Universitas Airlangga in driving sustainability initiatives in Indonesia and across the wider ASEAN region. By harnessing our collective research capabilities, expertise, and resources, we are able to better address the pressing sustainability challenges in this region. Moreover, we believe that our partnership will be able to cultivate the necessary talent pool that can contribute towards achieving our climate goals and building a sustainable future,” said Professor Lawrence Loh, Director of the Centre for Governance and Sustainability.
