Singapore, 30 July 2024 – The National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School today announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind Executive Master of Science in Management (EMIM) programme for individuals to upskill and reskill for new career roles.
The EMIM is a two-year, part-time Master’s degree programme that aims to fast-track individuals aged 40 and above, especially those without a Bachelor’s degree, to receive an advanced and specialised education that will deepen critical management skills, enhance credentials, and improve job prospects.
This new pathway is timely as a specialised postgraduate degree is beneficial for career advancement in an increasingly competitive global job market.
It is analogous to the current Master of Science in Management programme that has given pre-experience graduates a head-start in their careers. A case in point is 27-year-old Lee Jian Xing, who enrolled in the Master of Science in Management programme without prior working experience. Upon graduation, he was able to integrate the newly acquired data analytics knowledge with his accountancy and finance background. This enabled him to land a position as a crypto-trader at an investment firm, along with a higher salary as compared to his peers.
Distinguished Professor Andrew Rose, Dean of NUS Business School, said, “Building on the success of our Master’s programme, we decided to curate the EMIM for mature individuals and working professionals in view of today’s dynamic job market. This programme is designed to be inclusive and non-qualification biased so that more people can benefit from it.”
“While a basic degree is a pre-requisite for admission into a conventional Master’s programme, non-degree holders can also apply for EMIM. We believe that the EMIM will create more opportunities for them to seek new career advancements,” he added.
The first intake for the pilot EMIM programme is in January 2026. Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible for a 40% rebate from NUS on the relevant tuition fees.
Flexible and Comprehensive Curriculum
To enrol in the EMIM, students are required to complete and pass two gateway courses by end 2025. The gateway courses are entry level programmes to provide students with a strong foundation in the fields of financial accounting and business analytics. The four credits obtained from both gateway courses will count towards the 40 credits needed to graduate with an EMIM. SkillsFuture credits can be used to offset the fees of the gateway courses.
Upon completion of the gateway courses, students are then eligible for admission to the EMIM programme, according to prevailing criteria. The curriculum will cover a wide range of essential business topics, such as accounting and financial policies, business strategy, analytics, cross-cultural team management, digital marketing, sustainability, and the intricacies of the Asian economic landscape. The EMIM is a part-time course which involves a combination of hybrid learning and in-person class lessons.
EMIM graduates can look forward to enriching their roles in general management or moving to specialised roles in the fields of marketing, finance or human resources. They will also be well-equipped to launch their own businesses.
