The JY Pillay Comparative Asia Research Centre (CARC) was set up in 2012 under the Global Asia Institute (NUS GAI) to pursue comparative research into key development issues facing Asia, in particular its three giants – India, China, and Indonesia. The Centre focuses specifically on cross-national comparative studies within Asia and is named in honour of Professor J.Y. Pillay, renowned Singaporean policy maker and corporate leader.

Akio Naito

President of Seiko Watch Corporation, Senior Executive Vice President of Seiko Group Corporation,

Akio Naito is the President of Seiko Watch Corporation (“SWC”) and, concurrently, the Senior Executive Vice President of Seiko Group Corporation (“SGC”), a publicly traded company in Japan. For nearly four decades at SGC and SWC, he has held key leadership roles, including such positions as the Managing Director of Seiko Australia Pty Ltd. (2002) as well as CFO of SGC (2013).  He was appointed to be the president of SWC in 2021.  During the seven years since he was assigned to be in charge of Grand Seiko’s global expansion in 2015, the sales volume grew by 10 times in the overseas market. Naito holds an LL.M. degree from Columbia Law School (1993, Fulbright Scholar).
