Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the sustainability landscape, creating both unprecedented opportunities and new challenges. As organisations accelerate AI adoption, questions are emerging about its energy demands, societal implications and governance risks. At the same time, geopolitical uncertainty and shifting policy priorities are reshaping the broader sustainability agenda. While AI can be a powerful enabler of sustainable development, its impact needs to be considered in terms of the perspectives of Economics, Environmental, Social and Governance (EESG).

In support of the NUS Sustainability CONNECT Festival 2026, the Centre for Governance and Sustainability at NUS Business School is organising the masterclass “Sustainability in the AI Age: Opportunities and Challenges”.

Designed for both students and industry professionals, this masterclass examines how sustainability strategies, business decisions and career opportunities are being reshaped by the rapid advancement of AI. The discussion will consider the evolving global context, including changing climate priorities among major economies and the growing influence of AI across industries and societies. Participants will gain insights into possible future sustainability scenarios, and the key risks and trade-offs that organisations must navigate. The session will also explore the sustainability skills and mindsets that students and professionals may need to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven world.

Prof Lawrence Loh

Prof Lawrence Loh is the Director of the Centre for Governance and Sustainability (CGS) at NUS Business School, where he is also Professor in Practice of Strategy and Policy. He serves as Executive Director of the Well-being and EESG Alliance (WEGA) which is a collaboration between CGS and TPC (Tsao Pao Chee). Prof Loh is Visiting Professor at Wealth Management Institute in Singapore as well as Training Partner at United Nations Global Compact Network Singapore.

Prof Loh earned his PhD in Management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his thesis on technology governance won the global first prize in the field of information systems. He qualified for the doctoral program in finance and economics and attained doctoral candidacy in strategy and policy.

At CGS, Prof Loh leads major corporate governance and sustainability initiatives across Asia-Pacific, ASEAN and Singapore. He serves as judge for various sustainability awards across Asia and Singapore. Prof Loh was chief consultant for national technology and manpower projects for Singapore government agencies. He served as member of the National Science and Technology Think Tank and was Chief Facilitator for the National Technology Plan. Prof Loh also provided consultancy to leading global corporations and international organizations. He has delivered executive development programs for key institutions throughout the region.

Prof Loh is widely recognized as a thought leader in sustainability, governance and strategy, regularly contributing insights to major international and local media. He has an average of over 500 media citations per year over the past five years. Prof Loh is a multi-time recipient of both the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award and the NUS Business School Teaching Excellence Award, earning a place on the University’s Honour Roll for his sustained outstanding teaching performance.
