Singapore, 10 October 2019 – Professor Teo Chung Piaw from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School has been recognised by The Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) as a fellow, one of only a dozen named worldwide annually. He is the only fellow ever named from an Asian institution in the fellowship’s 17-year history.
Prof Teo is being honoured for his exceptional contributions in optimising business processes particularly in inventory, logistics and supply chain management, as well as for outstanding leadership and service to the profession.
He has developed methods to understand and manage business risks and optimise efficiency in operations and supply chains. His work has been used in designing vessel-berthing schedules in ports, managing risk exposure of gaming products, and in pricing and assortment optimisation.
“I am truly grateful to the Operations Research (OR) community in Singapore and NUS, my colleagues in the Department of Analytics and Operations, and former students now teaching in various institutions, for making this award possible,” said Professor Teo. “This award is also a testament to the quality of the OR professionals based in Singapore, and I hope it will spur more students, especially Singaporean, to consider pursuing a PhD in this field.”
Prof Teo graduated from NUS with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mathematics. After completing his PhD in Operations Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he returned to Singapore to lecture at NUS Business School. He has since risen up the ranks within the school to his current position of Professor and Provost’s Chair at the Department of Analytics & Operations, and is also the Executive Director of the Institute of Operations Research and Analytics at NUS.
“My sincere congratulations to Chung Piaw for his outstanding lifetime achievement in operations research and management sciences,” said Distinguished Professor Andrew K. Rose, Dean, NUS Business School. “He is among the few scholars to have ever served as Department Editors in the two flagship journals of INFORMS – Operations Research and Management Science. Prof Teo has also been instrumental in leading our Department of Analytics and Operations to its position as one of the top departments in the world in the field of Operations Research and Analytics.”
INFORMS is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to and promoting best practices and advances in operations research, management science, and analytics to improve operational processes, decision-making, and outcomes. Recipients of its fellowship include Nobel Prize winners Harry Markowitz and John Nash who were recognised in 2002.
