Research Apprentice

Job Description

The successful candidate will be working with me on a project related to work, health and well-being, and impact of IT on work. Specifically, the research will focus on cyberloafing, job insecurity and work and well-being. The candidate will be trained on how to conduct literature review, design research studies and data analysis. This traineeship is a good opportunity for students who are keen in pursuing graduate studies/research careers or a career in consulting.

The trainees will gain exposure to the following functional areas:

  • Library searches and Literature review
  • Designing surveys and data management
  • Data Analysis and Reporting

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct library searches and literature review
  2. Design experiments and surveys
  3. Conduct data collection & interviews

Research Apprentices (HSS)

Job Description

This position is designed for graduates from 2019 (and have yet to secure a job) and the upcoming graduating cohort from 2020 and want to gain research experiences and prepare themselves to apply for other graduate degrees, including master of science or doctoral degrees in business administration or human resource management (HRM), or any other research positions in government research facilities or any other research institutions. This position reports to Dr. Ke Michael Mai in the Department of Management and Organisation at NUS Business School, and also interacts with other graduate students while working on projects and participate in doctoral level seminar and courses. We are committed to help developing an encouraging working and studying environment to enable individuals a great opportunity to explore and learn how to conduct and design social science research in the context of business administration, applied psychology, and human resource management, through active mentorship and proactive learning and seminar approaches. These will not only help you assemble a great application package for your graduate school applications, but also enable you to have a complete picture of what academic research will be like. Over the course of the apprenticeship, you will work with many aspects of research projects and programs. You will also hold general laboratory administrative responsibilities, joining the team who help to run our research projects on a day to day basis.

The trainees will gain exposure to the following functional areas:

  • Research project design
  • Social psychology experiment design
  • Filed experiment design
  • Business administration field survey design
  • Basic data analyses
  • Advanced data analyses (e.g., Structural Equation Modelling)
  • Exploring academic topics (e.g., employee wellbeing, ethics, creativity)

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Weekly meeting with the academic mentor about research project and learning progress
  • Compile documentation related to Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements e.g. Personal Information Sheet (PIS) and consent forms for study participants
  • Coordinate with participants on field service project/internship project observations schedules and venues
  • Conduct literature review to support the design of research instruments
  • Conduct and record lesson observations within NUS campus and external organizations that provide internship/field service project opportunities for student participants
  • Conduct face-to-face (or virtual) interviews and focus group interviews with student participants or employees
  • Collect related project materials (e.g., employee survey data)
  • Transcribe and analyse data (e.g. survey, audio) at various stages of the study
  • Attend relevant training to be equipped with skills needed to perform the above tasks
  • Attend academic seminars to equip the theoretical framework and knowledge
  • Attend and contribute to research project meetings and discussions
  • Draft research papers and reports

Competencies trainee will learn during SGUnited Traineeship Programme:

  1. Active participation in the research project planning process, including developing research goals, objectives and empirical testing
  2. How to engage a research question and formulate the rigorous research process to test
  3. Gain experiences with various research methods (e.g., experiment, field data collection)

Qualifications:

  1. Interested in academic research in the context of business administration and HRM
  2. Undergraduate degree in
  3. Proficient with Microsoft Word and
  4. Familiarity with research methods and tools, .e.g., Google Scholar to conduct a literature review for recent studies on employee creativities and
  5. Understand the basics of business research methods and
  6. Basic knowledge with statistical packages, e.g., SPSS, STATA or R (SPSS or STATA preferred) is a
  7. Proficiency in English (Knowing another language, for example, Mandarin or Malay, is a plus)
  8. Independent, self-starter with initiatives and commitment
  9. Enjoys interacting with people and open to new experiences
  10. Project management

Doctoral Apprentice

Job Description

The trainee would be expected to help conduct research related to human-robot interactions from a business perspective. Sample projects include exploring how robots’ appearances affect customer satisfaction and leadership evaluations. This position is ideal for individuals who would like to pursue doctoral training in Organizational Behavior, Social Psychology, and the Social Sciences more generally. This position reports to Dr Sam Yam.

The trainees will gain exposure to the following functional areas:

  • Empirical research
  • Statistical analyses
  • Survey/study design
  • Data collection
  • Scientific writing

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Collect behavioral data in the subject pool
  2. Assist in survey and study design
  3. Conduct basic statistical analyses

Competencies trainee will learn during SGUnited Traineeship Programme:

  1. Gain experience with the process of scientific research
  2. Gain experience with basic statistical analyses
  3. Engage in his/her own research projects

Qualifications:

  1. Degree
  2. Strong verbal and written communication skills
  3. Proficient with basic statistical programs and analyses (e.g., SPSS, regression, )
  4. Proficient with programming (desired but not required)
