Since its inception in the 1960s, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) have established themselves as a distinctive asset class with a total market capitalisation surpassing US$1.7tn in 37 countries. China is now poised to kickstart its onshore REIT regime (C-REIT), which is set to reinvent Chinese developers’ business models, rejuvenate the immense housing stock, unlock the value of commercial properties, and expand the portfolios of investors, at home and abroad.

The inaugural Singapore-China REITs Forum, jointly organised by NUS Business School and PKU Guanghua School of Management, will explore the core dimensions of the developments in the C-REIT sector, its promise and challenges.

Officially launched in 1999, the Singapore REIT sector has expanded exponentially and evolved into one of the major international REIT hubs, offering investors the opportunity to explore broadly diversified portfolios with assets located globally, ranging from shopping malls in China to office buildings in the U.S. The Forum will touch on lessons the budding C-REIT could learn from the phenomenal growth of Singapore REIT (S-REIT), how the vibrant S-REIT platform could bring Chinese assets onto the global stage, and the landscape of Singapore-China financial collaboration through the linkage of REITs.
