Rapid advances in technology over the past 20 years have propelled humanity to another inflexion point. Some call it the Fourth Industrial Revolution, brought about by information technology in all spheres of production and communication. Economists have called this the next convergence of globalisation.

In this year’s Wee Chow Yaw Forum, we will explore these changes and their implications for financial markets and economic growth alongside the recent debut of China’s new Nasdaq-style Technology Innovation Board.

Dubbed the STAR Market, the new board based at the Shanghai Stock Exchange incorporates a registration-based IPO system that marks a major shift from China’s approval-based listing mechanism. The move is viewed as China’s boldest financial reform in the past two decades and a key pillar of the nation’s plans to overhaul its financial systems and further open its markets.

Of the 20 largest tech corporations in the world, nine are in China. They have grown and prospered on Chinese soil, yet none of them are listed on the $7.6 trillion Chinese domestic capital markets. The new board give Chinese investors the opportunity to partake in the phenomenal growth of the nation’s tech champions and is set to strengthen Shanghai’s place as a global financial centre.

Join us in Shanghai as we explore the promise of this game-changing move, and how this and other capital markets or financial institutions – including those in Singapore – can take Chinese technology companies to the global stage. We’ll examine the implications of the new board for the future growth of China and the global economy, the reform of China’s financial sector, and the linkage between China and global financial markets.
