As part of our programme, we are currently working<br \/>\non an \u201cEconometrics Project\u201d (overseen by Prof. Mark Schaffer from Heriot-Watt<br \/>\nUniversity) and set out to replicate and challenge the findings of your recent<br \/>\nworking paper \u201cSurprising Similarities: Recent Monetary Regimes of Small<br \/>\nEconomies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">First<br \/>\nand foremost we would like to thank you for allowing us access to your dataset<br \/>\nand log files, especially for keeping everything so comprehensive.\u00a0Having<br \/>\nhad a closer look at your dataset and your regressions, we highlighted some<br \/>\npoints you may or may not have come discovered since we accessed your files and<br \/>\nwanted to share our results with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">We<br \/>\nfound some duplicates in your dataset that change your results fairly<br \/>\ninsignificantly but thought you would still want to know. Attached in the zip<br \/>\nfile are copies of our log and do files that compare your original regressions<br \/>\nin ptest1.log to the results when one drops the duplicates. We actually<br \/>\nidentified the issue when we tried to xtset your data. The observation that<br \/>\nrepeatedly crops up in the regressions is Sudan (2011) although this is not the<br \/>\nonly duplicate in your dataset, however we are not sure if the others are in someway<br \/>\nintentional due to the different classifications of monetary regime. The other<br \/>\nlog file include does exactly the same thing for the xtivreg regressions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">We<br \/>\nalso have reason to believe that the model may be estimated in a fashion other<br \/>\nthan the conventional Random Effects GLS. You may have noticed that in several<br \/>\nof your regressions the sigma_u=0. This suggests that Random Effects<br \/>\ndegenerates to a Pooled OLS, which can be verified by using the \u2018regress\u2019 in<br \/>\nplace of \u2018xtreg\u2019. Ordinarily one would proceed by performing a Hausman Test,<br \/>\nhowever as you mention fixed effects is not applicable due to the lack of<br \/>\nbetween orthogonality conditions. We test the consistency of Random Effects by<br \/>\nusing Mundlak fixed effects where the dependent variable is regressed on the<br \/>\nexplanatory variables and the mean of the explanatory variables. By using<br \/>\n\u2018xtoverid\u2019 command (package xtoverid from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fmwww.bc.edu\/RePEc\/bocode\/x\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">http:\/\/fmwww.bc.edu\/RePEc\/bocode\/x<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">) we test<br \/>\nwhether the additional orthogonality conditions of the Random Effects estimator<br \/>\nare overidentifying, thus rendering Random Effects inconsistent. The log file<br \/>\nis also attached for this procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Century Schoolbook','serif'\">Our<br \/>\nsuggestion is that the time-variant regressors are driving the rejection of the<br \/>\nnull and that this can be avoided by estimating them using only the within<br \/>\northogonality conditions and the time invariant regressors using only the<br \/>\nbetween orthogonality conditions.
