Co-hosted by Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations (CGIO) and ASEAN CSR Network, the Conference on Corporate Governance and Responsibility: Theory Meets Practice was a resounding success.

Held from 20 to 22 July 2016 at the NUSS Kent Ridge Guild House, National University of Singapore, the 3-day conference was attended by more than 282 academics and stakeholders including CSR practitioners and academics, international and regional civil society bodies and government officials.

Headlined by keynote speaker Professor Jeremy Moon, Velux Professor of Corporate Sustainability, Copenhagen Business School, the strong line up of conference’s speakers shared their research and implementation of corporate governance and responsibility through interactive workshops and plenary discussions.

In his speech, Guest of Honour Masagos Zulkifli bin Masagos Mohamad, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, recognised the strong influence of ASEAN businesses in promoting environmental sustainability. He also hailed the conference for bringing the private sector, academia and government together to shape sustainable development in the region. In particular, Minister Masagos also commended CGIO, which has been involved in the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard since 2013. It has become an asset for ASEAN in raising the standards of corporate governance among listed companies in the region and in turn, increasing their visibility to investors.

On the final day of the conference, participants were treated to site visits to witness corporate sustainability in action. After being introduced to the premium anti-pollution and filtration properties at Marina Barrage, Singapore’s 15th reservoir, they ended the day at NTUC Fairprice, founded with a social mission to moderate the cost of living in Singapore and the nation’s largest retailer today serving over half a million shoppers daily, with a network of over 130 outlets.
