Funding Entrepreneurial Growth in Asia: The Changing Role of Private Equity and Venture Capital Investment Industry in Asia

As global economic growth shifts increasingly from West to East, and from Advanced Economies to Emerging Markets, the Private Equity and Venture Capital Investment Industry in Asia is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years to fund the entrepreneurial growth of the region. In this panel discussion, we have assembled some of the leading PE/VC investors to share their insights and perspectives on the financing needs & opportunities at different stages of firm growth (early stage start-ups vs. growth stage SMEs), different growth/exit mechanisms (M&A, trade sales, IPO), different markets in Asia (SE Asia vs. North Asia and South Asia), and different sectors (technology, consumer goods, internet/social media, etc).

Prof Wong Poh Kam, Professor of NUS Business School and Director of NUS Entrepreneurship Centre

Dr Wong obtained two BSc.’s., an MSc. and a Ph.D. from MIT. He is a Full Professor at National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. He has published widely on high tech entrepreneurship, innovation strategy and venture investing. He is also concurrently the Director of the NUS Entrepreneurship Centre, where he spearheads the university’s entrepreneurship education and outreach programs and various university technology spin-off support programs including incubation services, seed funding and mentoring.  He has been active in promoting technology entrepreneurship activities in Singapore, including initiating the StartUp@Singapore Competition (an annual national business plan competition in Singapore) and the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) in Singapore. He is an active angel investor in high tech start-ups in Singapore, Silicon Valley, China and India. He is the founding chairman of Business Angel Network Southeast Asia (BANSEA) and BAF Spectrum Pte Ltd, an angel investment fund co-invested by SPRING SEEDS Capital, a Singapore government fund. He has consulted extensively for public and private organisations in Asia, and has taught and directed many senior executive development programs in innovation management and high tech investing. Dr Markus Taussig, Assistant Professor, NUS Business School

Markus Taussig is an Assistant Professor in Strategy and Policy at the NUS Business School in Singapore, where he teaches an MBA course titled Asian Business Environments. He received his DBA in Strategy from Harvard Business School, MA in International Economics from Johns Hopkins University, and BA in Politics from Oberlin College. Markus' research focuses on the interaction of government institutions and firm resources and how this impacts on firm strategy and performance in emerging economies. He has based his research primarily in the settings of private equity across emerging economies and business development, more generally, in Vietnam. During over a decade of work in Vietnam, Markus carried out numerous national surveys of local entrepreneurs, contributed to audits of state-owned enterprises, and was directly involved in starting up two companies. More recently, while working on his dissertation, Markus spent two years working closely with the PE group at the International Finance Corporation on analysis of their portfolio of investments.

Mr Tan Kim Seng, Founder and Managing Director, 3V SourceOne Capital

Mr Tan is a Managing Director and co-founder of 3VS1, a regional private equity firm with presence in Singapore, China and USA. He is also the Honorary Treasurer of the Singapore Venture Capital and Private Equity Association. He has been involved in direct investments in Greater China, USA and ASEAN since 1994. He was previously an Executive Director and Principal Fund Manager of UOB Venture Management.

Mr Tan started his engineering career with Texas Instruments Singapore and subsequently joined Northern Telecom as a section head responsible for new product introduction. He has also served as an Assistant Vice President in commercial banking with the United Overseas Bank Group.

Mr Tan holds a M.Sc. (Industrial Eng.) and a B.Eng. (EE) (Hons) degree from the National University of Singapore. He is an alumnus of the US Venture Capital Institute.

Ms Veronica Eng, Partner and Chairman - Asia, Permira Advisers

Veronica Eng is a founding partner of Permira, serves on the Board, chairs all Permira funds’ Investment Committee globally and has oversight of the firm’s operations in Asia. Prior to June 2011, Veronica was the Fund Minder of Permira IV, Permira Europe III, Permira Europe II and Permira Europe I.

Permira is a European private equity firm with a global reach operating from 12 offices worldwide. The firm advises funds with committed capital of approximately €20billion. The Permira funds make long term investments in companies with the ambition of transforming their performance and driving sustainable growth.

Over more than 25 years with Permira, Veronica has worked in wide ranging roles on many Permira transactions across sectors and countries including acquisitions, exits, restructurings, as well as financings. Prior to joining Permira, Veronica was Head of Corporate Finance at Schroder Investment Bank in Singapore.

Veronica has a degree in Business Administration from the University of Singapore, Singapore and serves as a member of the CAMRI Board of Directors.

Mr Pierre Hennes, Managing Partner, Extream Ventures

Pierre is Managing Partner of Extream Ventures, a Singapore-based early-stage VC firm launched in 2009, funded in part by the Singapore Government’s National Research Foundation. Pierre has significant experience in Venture Capital and has been active in new venture creation across Asia since 2003. In addition to his role at Extream Ventures, he is a Partner of Upstream Ventures, a Singapore-based seed & startup investment firm launched in 2003. He currently serves as Honorary Secretary of the Singapore Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SVCA), Chairman of the Business Angels Network of Southeast Asia (BANSEA) and Charter Member and Director of TiE Singapore. Pierre earned a B.A. with Honors in International Relations from Boston University, and an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business.
