The Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations (CGIO) together with Strategic Relations of NUS Business School are pleased to organise a talk on ‘Stakeholder Capitalism in the New Economy’ at NUS Business School on Wednesday, 12 February 2020.

We are privileged to have the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Professor Jan Peter Balkenende, and currently Professor of Governance, Institutions and Internationalisation at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Chairman of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition deliver the keynote lecture. This will be followed by a panel discussion with experts including Professor Jolene Lin, Director of Asia Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL), NUS Faculty of Law and Mr Thomas Thomas, CEO of ASEAN CSR Network. The panel discussion will be moderated by Prof Lawrence Loh, Director, CGIO.

Event Synopsis

Stakeholder capitalism, as opposed to shareholder capitalism, is a system where corporations serve the interests of stakeholders rather than the shareholders. Proponents of this system have hailed it as the best approach to ensuring corporate sustainability in the new economy; however, sceptics argue that the many conflicting and opposing demands imposed on companies make it a recipe for failure.

This begs the question: is stakeholder capitalism a passing fad or an enduring phenomenon that attempts to develop and harmonise corporate governance and corporate sustainability practises and direction?  Or is it a public relations endeavour espoused by big business to give itself a friendlier corporate image whilst carrying on with business as usual.

Scholars, analysts and critics hold opposing views with regards to this trend in sustainable economic development, and there are even some debates whether it is creating the very problem it is trying to solve.

Join us on February 12, learn from our expert panel and add your voice to the debate.

Deadline for complimentary registration: 3 February 2020 23:59:00
