August 27, 2008 saw the official opening of the S3 Asia MBA  Programme, an inaugural tri-university double degree MBA programme jointly established by Fudan University, Korea University and the National University of Singapore Business School. The opening was held at Fudan University, marking the first collaboration between these three prominent universities in Asia, and kicking off the start of the programme.

Established by the S3 University Alliance  (S3 representing the cities anchoring the universities – Shanghai, Seoul and Singapore), the S3 Asia MBA Programme is the first of its kind in the world to integrate educational, business and cultural features from China, South Korea and Singapore into a singular curriculum structure.

The S3 University Alliance collaborative agreement was signed by the presidents of the three universities in May 2006, and was witnessed by Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew .

After a stringent six-month selection process, 33 students from six countries get the opportunity of being the first cohort of the programme since its launch on February 26, 2008. In the cohort, 30% are Korean, 30% are Chinese, 27% are Indian, and the rest are from Singapore, Indonesia and the USA. Representing various industries such as information technology, finance, manufacturing, real estate and engineering, they have an average age of 30 years and 6 years of working experience. Female students account for 30% of the cohort.

The opening ceremony was attended by the three deans - Professor Lu Xiongwen, Dean of School of Management, Fudan University, Professor Jang Hasung, Dean of Korea University Business School, and Professor Bernard Yeung, Dean of NUS Business School. Guests included Gan Teng Kiat, Deputy Consulate-General and Chia Choong Yeen, Consul of Culture and Education of the Republic of Singapore in Shanghai; Chen Yinzhang, President Assistant of Fudan University and Director of Foreign Affair's Office; and Mr Lim Daeho, Consul of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai.

Ms Teresa Lin, Vice Chairman & CEO, DBS Bank (China), delivered the keynote speech as the enterprise representative on “The Development of Asian Talents”. She noted that with business expansion, localization of multinational corporations in China, and globalization of state-owned enterprises, MBA graduates with a global vision would be much needed. As such, the S3 Asia MBA would promote the practicability of MBA education by means of regional cooperation among Asian business schools.

Aware of the future opportunities in Asia, the students at the ceremony felt a sense of honour and responsibility. The student representative who spoke at the ceremony, Govind Pandey from India, expressed his motivation and aspirations,”I am motivated by the growth potential of the Asian economies and the skills and knowledge that the S3 Asia MBA will equip me with. The real strength of this programme lies in the opportunity to interact with students from all over Asia and the rest of the world, in three renowned business schools in Asia.” Another student, Shi Yan, from Fudan also enthused, “By experiencing Asia’s best-of-the-best integrated platform of management education, I’m well prepared to equip myself with a global vision, and an extensive scale of working abilities so as to manage the complexities of worldwide business waves.”
