About the academic speakers 

Prof J.Ramachandran, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore
J. Ramachandran is Professor of Strategy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. His research focuses on the growth and governance challenges of business groups, multinational corporations and creative firms. His work has been published in the Harvard Business Review, Strategic Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of Product Innovation Management, to name a few. Professor Ramachandran is the first Bain Fellow in India. A qualified Chartered and Cost Accountant, and a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Professor Ramachandran has been a Visiting Professor at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, USA; and the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, USA.

Associate Professor Ishtiaq Pasha Mahmood, NUS Business School 
Ishtiaq Pasha Mahmood is Associate Professor of Strategy and Policy at NUS Business School. Pasha's research covers the interface between corporate strategy and international business and is driven by his fundamental curiosity regarding why some firms continue to prosper while others stagnate. Pasha won the Haynes Prize from the Academy of International Business (AIB) for the most prominent scholar in international business under the age of 40. He also sits on the editorial boards of Strategic Management Journal, and the Journal of International Business Studies. Diversified business groups such as Samsung in Korea, Tata in India or Formosa in Taiwan are an integral part of the corporate landscape that intrigues Pasha. Pasha obtained his B.A. in Economics from Oberlin College and his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Event Summary

On 29 August 2014, CGIO organised a roundtable on the diversification dilemma. Sponsored by J.P.Morgan, the event attracted more than 50 participants who were business owners, their next-gen successors, professional managers as well as experts of the field. 

Prof J.Ramachandran and Associate Professor Pasha delivered their academic presentations "Why Conglomerates Thrive" and "Innovation in the New World order: Two Faces of Family Business Groups" respectively. Thereafter, an invigorating panel discussion ensued with the distinguished panelists.  The panelists shared with the audience their personal anecdotes and best practices on how they grew their family business through diversification, as well as the obstacles they faced. Participants attended the post-roundtable networking session, and continued discussing the challenges raised and debated during the roundtable.
