"Besides cultural similarities, Singapore provides me the opportunity and environment to perfect my English and learn Chinese at the same time.
Though there are many MBA programs offered by top China universities, only Peking University has this unique dual-degree IMBA program, with one year in PKU and another in NUS. Compared with normal MBAs, IMBA doubled my experiences and gains as I not only have a close link to China's economic issues, which are hot topics in the world, but also a broadened view of the regional, social and economic issues in Asia-Pacific. Classmates from India, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines plus exhange students from all over the world make us a diverse group. Dealing with people everyday from different cultures certainly enhanced my capability, skill, team-spirit, tolerance and respect towards others.
So be prepared, days in NUS will fly you by, and life is as short as it is full of wonders.
Each time I recall the time I spent in PKU and NUS, I cannot help feeling thankful that I made the right choice to join this program and I believe the experience I have gained will benefit me tremendously in my career development.
The IMBA course has helped me think like an international businessman. There are many experienced teachers who have in-depth understanding of international businesses in both PKU and NUS. Many of them possess past or present successful practical business experiences. In addition, through several networking meetings, we?ve had opportunities to communicate directly with some successful entrepreneurs in China and Singapore. I learnt a lot from them in terms of developing the right mindset and principles to achieve success in this fast developing global business.
Moreover, this program has enabled me to incorporate western management theory with Chinese culture. In NUS, professors are proficient in western management theory and the culture on the campus is more West-inclined. On the contrary in PKU, the professors have a more in-depth understanding of business operations in China and the atmosphere on the campus is full of traditional Chinese culture. The experience of studying in two renowned academic institutions will no doubt help me better apply and integrate modern management theories with Chinese culture.
Lastly, I have made many good friends both within and outside the MBA program in the 2 years of study. My first degree was in Law and most of my friends were confined within this discipline. Now my current MBA friends hail from all kinds of backgrounds and this has provided me with a good opportunity to communicate with people from different parts of the world.
From having a major in Chemistry and no prior business experience, the IMBA course has definitely broadened my perspective on business administration and operations.
The program has also provided me the opportunity to mingle with different cultures and races. In Singapore, I have learnt a lot about the local Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures.
I have made a lot of friends, including my classmates and others. All of my classmates are of reasonable intellect and have impressive work experiences.
As the majority of the classes were conducted in English, I had to listen, write and engage in discussions in English. Being a Chinese student, this was an enriching experience for me. After one and half years of study, my English language has improved significantly.
Many professors in NUS are overseas Chinese and are formerly from famous universities in U.S. and Europe. They had lived there for many years and have developed a deep understanding of the western culture. In addition, their Chinese background gave them an all-rounded scope of experience which I found invaluable.
With their training and guidance, I am not only able to observe and learn much from the vast superficial and in-depth differences between the east and west culture and integrate the knowledge of the two cultures, but also the different schools of thought and behaviour. I believe this will help me to become a professional manager with global perspective.
Also, I am confident that that the case studies, training and interviews with local executives will hone our skills to formulate and solve complex real-world problems and develop significant leadership qualities in the global context.
