The University Scholars Program (USP) at NUS is a bold initiative to develop the personal, intellectual and leadership qualities of promising men and women enrolled at the National University of Singapore. These qualities are necessary to shape our cultural perspectives and national priorities, and guide Singapore in this 21st century. The USP holds promise of making NUS the hotbed for the intellectual and cultural developments of the ablest young people in Singapore and beyond.
The University Scholars Program commenced in July 2001, and draws participation from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, School of Computing, and School of Design and the Environment. About 180 students are welcome into the community yearly. USP is weaved into the four-year Honours programs of the respective faculties and schools, and is like a Double (second) Major in liberal arts for bright and passionate NUS students. University Scholars must show consistently good performance in order to stay in the Program and to proceed on to Honours.
The USP is NUS' premier leadership program that provides the multidisciplinary intellectual grounding for nurturing talen to tackle the significantly big issues. It aims to create a close-knit Ivy-League liberal-arts experience for the select group, and is therefore particularly suitable for the ablest students in the BBA, which is NUS' flexible broad-based leadership and management talent program. Biz USP students and alumni community participates in the BIZUSP forum.
Within the USP, students can look forward to typically excellent verbal English while discussing intellectual questions in humanities classes, and to stimulating conceptual insights by addressing the fundamental questions in science classes. For inquisitive minds, the list of challenging USP modules and the prospect of engaging participation can be tremendous draws. USP students are guaranteed 4 years of optional on-campus housing together in NUS' Prince Goerge's Park Residences, and shall form the selective USP College in the new University Town (the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Village for 3200 athletes and 800 officials from 200 countries) extending from the Kent Ridge Campus. The camaraderie within the vibrant USP community begs to be savoured and treasured. Eligible students who are altogether sensitive, inquisitive and articulate need look no further. A glimpse of the USP spirit may be appreciated in this video.
Biz USP students wishing to be groomed to tackle the biggest issues are particularly encouraged to apply for the Concurrent BBA(Hons) & MPP programme and graduate with 2 degrees in 4.5 years, with the possibility of adding another master's degree, an MPA from Columbia, LSE or Sciences Po of the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN), given an extra half-year (5 years in all). Likewise, unlike for other dual-bachelor programmes, BBA(H)+USP+MSc(Mgt) takes no longer than BBA(H)+MSc(Mgt), and enjoys the same upgrade potential via an European Master's in International Management (MIM), with scholarships available. Generally, USP fits in better with Concurrent Programmes (Bachelor + Master) than Dual Degree Programmes (Bachelor + Bachelor). USP students in our BBA(Accountancy) Honours programme also need not take extra modules.
USP is well funded, and offers students many exclusive overseas opportunities, including the elite Yuanpei-USP Bicultural Immersion Programme, the USP-Waseda Double Degree Programme, the NUS-in-Yale Programme, the Harvard College in Asia Project and the USP-Stanford Undergraduate Forum. A sample of other USP events can be can be found at this link. Please consult the USP web site for admissions (separate from BBA admissions), click here for FAQs on the USP, or visit the USP prospective students' site or portal. Students are admitted to the USP together with their admissions to NUS; a very small number of students join USP after one semester in NUS. Admissions to USP do not carry any financial award. A separate application is required for NUS financial awards and aids.
University Scholars in the NUS Business School are required to take 12 Scholars modules (8 First-Tier modules plus 4 Advanced Curriculum modules) in lieu of regular University Level Requirements and some BBA requirements. USP students who completed their NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) program are deemed to have also completed all their Advanced Curriculum modules, while also earning a Technopreneurship Minor at the same time.
USP students may also take their Advanced Curriculum modules with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. USP students on overseas exchange may substitute up to one First-Tier module and one Advanced Curriculum module with USP's approval. Please consult this link for details.
USP students on overseas exchange may substitute up to one First-Tier module and one Advanced Curriculum module with USP's approval. Please consult this link for details.
Although many USP students participate in the NOC and the Student Exchange Program (SEP), both at the NUS level as well as School level, nonetheless, the USP, NOC and SEP are separate and independent value-adding programs for Bizaders.

#BBA Hons students must take 3 modules from the list of essential modules under one of the 6 specializations and 1 module from the restricted elective modules in the same specialization.
##Two of the advanced modules must be from the same specialization.
###Students in the BBA (ACC.Hons.) programme must take 2 advanced modules offered by Business School at level-4000 or higher.
Note:
(a) USP students are not required to take ES2002 Business Communication.
(b) NUS Business School offers two categories of Advanced Modules:
- Independent Study Modules (ISMs)
- Course-Based Modules (CBMs)
USP students in the BBA (Hons) program are required to take 2 ISMs offered by the NUS Business School and 2 CBMs offered by any Faculties (including the Business School). Both ISMs and CBMs may be substituted with approved level-5000 or above modules.
(c) Three categories of Independent Study Modules are available to USP Scholars at the NUS Business School:
(i) Group Study: Students are to form groups of up to a maximum of 7 members, identify a faculty member who is willing to supervise the group, and negotiate with the potential supervisor the topic and its coverage, the requirements and deliverables for the ISM. Typically, students will be expected to engage in lots of reading, making presentations and criticizing articles. Students are also expected to write one or several reports, depending on the negotiation with the supervisor.
(ii) 5000 or higher level Master's course based modules: Students could opt to do any of the approved 5000-level research coursework modules. In opting for this, students will attend the same classes as the graduate students and will be expected to engage in the same assignments and reports expected of the class.
(iii) Modified regular modules: Students could opt to do any of the approved 3000/4000-level classes. In opting for this, students will, in addition to the regular requirements for the course, negotiate with the instructors involved for additional requirements. This additional load is expected to be at least 20% more than the normal requirement of the module concerned.
Please refer to the following web site for further details on ISMs and CBMs.
