Ad Hoc Double Degree Programmes with Bachelor of Business Administration

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is a pre-eminent broad-based leadership and management talent programme for sensitive, inquisitive and articulate students.

Besides specially customised double degrees and concurrent degrees developed by the School of Business and partnering Faculties or Departments (e.g. BBA+Communications, BBA+Engineering, BBA+Law), any eligible NUS non-Business undergraduate student can construct an ad hoc double-degree combination with the BBA or the BBA Honours (BBA(H)) programme. Superior students may consider as an alternative the Concurrent mini-analytic-MBA-like Master of Science in Management with scholarship (extendable yet to an extra European Master's in International Management). Students with time pressure could read instead the 12-module BBA-subset Major in Management, or even the 6-module Minor in Management.

Excellent Biz students with a wide vision have the additional option of pursuing concurrently the public-sector-MBA-like Master in Public Policy from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. These students also have the opportunity, given an extra half-year, of adding another master's degree (dual masters): an MPA from Columbia in New York, LSE in London, or Sciences Po in Paris, all of the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN). Thus, the bests among them may accelerate and take only 5 years in all for the bachelor and dual masters. BBA students wishing instead to sample the MBA, or are Europe-bent, may accelerate during the BBA+MSc(Mgt)+MIM programme under scholarship, again completing in 5 years with triple degrees. Eligible Biz students may also gain an ad hoc double degree in one of the many areas offered by other NUS faculties.

A student obtains 2 degrees inscribed on 2 separate degree scrolls after completing a double degree programme. The student's non-Business degree must be with Honours (4-year equivalent).

The rest of this page applies to any ad hoc programme put together by an originally non-Business student, but also serves as a reference for future specially designed joint-bachelor, dual-bachelor or BBA+Master's programmes with partner Universities, Schools, Faculties or Departments. (Some information is provided for a Business student putting together an ad hoc double degree programme with a partnering non-Business department or faculty, which is only possible for a student intending to be in the BBA(H) program. Henceforth, such a student is referred to as a BBA(H) student, for simplicity. In general, all relevant regulations below apply reciprocally to the BBA(H) student.)

Roughly, before double counting, the BBA has a minimum of 17 modules normally taught in the School of Business; the BBA(H) has 6 more. Both programmes require 3 more modules in Writing, Programming and Statistics that are currently taken outside the School of Business. 14 of these 20 modules in the BBA and 18 of 26 in the BBA(H) cannot be double counted towards both the non-Business and the Business degrees.

At the normal pace of 10 modules yearly, double degree programmes with BBA and BBA(H) may take as few as 4.5 years and 5 years respectively, assuming that all Breadth Modules and Unrestricted Elective Modules for a student's non-Business degree are replaced with Business modules, and that the non-Business programme has at least 5 (4) Unrestricted Elective Modules when partnering BBA (BBA(H)). (The non-Honours programme that a BBA(H) student applies to must have at least 1 Unrestricted Elective Module.) Further, to keep within the minimum programme length, there may need to be up to 6 (8) common modules that can double count towards both the non-Business and the BBA (BBA(H)) degrees, depending on the paucity, beyond the minimum 5 (4) required, of the number of Unrestricted Elective Modules in the non-Business programme.

Accurate details below are stated in terms of Modular Credits (MCs). Please note that currently all School of Business modules carry 4 MCs, and may be studied in any order, provided any pre-requisites are fulfilled.

  1. Applying to the BBA Programme
  2. Acceptance Criteria
  3. Exiting from the BBA Programme
  4. Level of Study in the BBA Programme
  5. Minimum MC Requirements for Double Degrees
  6. Module Requirements and Double Counting
  7. Minimum Residency and Maximum Period of Candidature
  8. Computation of CAP
  9. Fees
  10. Awards, Dean's List, and Conferment of Degrees
1. Applying to the BBA Programme

A student generally must apply for the BBA programme soon after completing 60 or more MCs for the first time, except that he/she may still apply until soon after having completed 80 or less MCs for the last time (roughly, "between completing 60 and 80 MCs"; these MCs must be obtained from NUS modules, and must not include transferred credits earned via Student Exchange Programmes, or Advanced Placement Credits). Thus, a student generally must apply just after the third or fourth semester.

(Some specially designed double degree programmes may also admit students directly from outside NUS, and after students had completed one year at NUS).

The student must apply to the School of Business through the partnering non-Business Faculty (by writing to its Vice-Dean (Academic)), which would forward the application if it approves. (BBA students wishing to apply for double degrees must or write to the School of Business Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Academic & Admin), with a copy to the BBA Senior Manager. At the time of their applications, they need not have done enough Business modules to qualify for the BBA(H), but will not be awarded their non-Biz degree unless they will have also completed the BBA(H) programme).

Students who would like to pursue a double degree are advised to plan their modules carefully even before their third or fourth semester.

2. Acceptance Criteria

The minimum Cumulative Average Point (CAP) requirement for acceptance to the BBA programme for all non-Business students is 4.0 (between completing 60 and 80 MCs). (A BBA(H) student must also have a CAP of at least 4.0 when applying to another department.) In making a judgement about ability and potential, the School of Business and the partnering Faculty/Department would generally consider whether the student has read some modules in the BBA programme.

Students applying to our BBA(Accountancy) must have obtained at least B+ grades for both FNA1002 Financial Accounting and FNA2002 Managerial Accounting.

The student must generally have a pass in 'AO' Level Mathematics or 'O' Level Additional Mathematics, or otherwise demonstrated equivalent preparation. The student's non-academic activities in NUS will be considered, and he/she may have to attend an interview.

(Some specially designed double degree programmes may also consider applicants' academic preparations before entering NUS.)

Although not explicit requirements, good communication and inter-personal skills are definite pluses, and fine writing skills help. 'A' Level Mathematics may be useful with some BBA module combinations.

A successful student is admitted into the BBA programme in the first instance (and may later be admitted into the BBA(H) programme upon qualification), even though the programme may be for double Honours.

3. Exiting from the BBA Programme

A student may decide to withdraw, can be deemed to have withdrawn, or can be withdrawn from the BBA programme. However, the student is not allowed to withdraw from the Partner's non-Business degree programme and transfer to the BBA programme. A student who exited from the Partner's non-Business Honours programme would be deemed to have automatically withdrawn from the BBA Programme.

After withdrawal from the BBA programme, all the modules that the student had taken to fulfil the requirements of the BBA programme will be reflected in the transcript, and included in the computation of the CAP for the Partner's degree programme. Some BBA modules may then count towards the Minor in Management, a subset of the BBA programme.

Students who do not maintain a CAP of 4.0 in modules contributing to the Partner's degree for any two consecutive semesters will be deemed to have withdrawn from the BBA programme. (This section also applies reciprocally to a BBA(H) student admitted into a double-degree programme with another faculty).

4. Level of Study in the BBA Programme

To be allowed to pursue the BBA programme, a student must pursue Honours in the Partner's degree programme, i.e. a student may pursue either Honours in both degrees, or only Honours in the Partner's degree and non-Honours in the Business programme.

Before completing (including any transferred credits) 28 MCs' (7 modules') worth of Business Foundation, Essential, or Restricted Elective modules (including any Substituting or Recognized modules), a student is considered as a BBA year-1 student.

After completing (including any transferred credits) at least 28 MCs' (7 modules') but before completing 56 MCs' (14 modules') worth of Business Foundation, Essential, or Restricted Elective modules (including any Substituting or Recognized modules), a student is considered as a BBA year-2 student.

After completing (including any transferred credits) at least 56 MCs' (14 modules') worth of Business Foundation, Essential, or Restricted Elective modules (including any Substituting or Recognized modules), a student with CAP in modules contributing to the BBA degree of at least 3.5 may transfer to the BBA(H) programme and be henceforth considered as a BBA Honours student (no further distinction is made between a "year-3" and a "year-4" Honours student). Students who remain in the BBA programme at that stage would be considered as BBA year-3 students.

In any case, a non-Honours student in his or her final term completing the BBA programme is considered a BBA year-3 student.

5. Minimum MC Requirements for Double Degrees

The minimum MC requirements for double degrees are as follows:

(a) A Partner's Honours degree and a BBA Degree: 180 MCs
(b) A Partner's Honours degree and a BBA Honours Degree: 200 MCs

The actual total MCs will be dependent on the requirements of the two degrees and how much double counting is possible between the two programmes.

A double degree with BBA and BBA(H) must therefore involve at least 20 and 40 extra MCs (5 and 10 modules) respectively.

6. Module Requirements and Double Counting

(a) The student will, in consultation with the undergraduate advisors of the School of Business and the partnering Faculty/Department, work out the requirements for the double degree programme. NUS undergraduate degrees have the following requirements:

The details are as follow:

(b) University Level Requirements:

(i) Students need to satisfy one set of University Requirements: 1 Singapore Studies (SS) module (4 MCs) and 2 General Education Modules (GEM) (8 MCs).

(1) Students must take at least one GEM from the Subject Group A (Science and Technology). Students from either the School of Design & Environment or faculties in Group A must take one GEM from Group B (Humanities and Social Sciences).

(2) If a student reads GEMs which are cross-listed with the BBA programme, and uses them to fulfil the requirement for the BBA degree, then the student must take other additional GEMs to fulfil the GEM requirement.

(ii) Students are exempted from Breadth Modules. This saves 16 MCs (4 modules) from the Partner's Honours programme. (Business students who applied to a Partner's non-Honours programme saves 8 MCs, or 2 modules.)

(c) Faculty/Department Requirements: The Faculty/Department requirements of the partnering Faculty or Department will have to be fulfilled. The School of Business has no Faculty or Department requirements.

(d) Major Requirements: Students need to satisfy both sets of Major requirements, all modules for which must be letter-graded if taken as NUS modules.

BBA/BBA(H) Major requirements consists of 14 Foundation Modules (56 MCs; 1 more module, 4 MCs, will be required for students entering NUS from August 2006), as well as Essential Modules and Restricted Elective Modules, making a total of 20 modules (80 MCs) for BBA and 26 modules (104 MCs) for BBA(H).

At least two-thirds of each set of Major requirements must be fulfilled by dedicated (i.e. unshared) modules, i.e. up to 26 MCs (round down to 6 modules) of the BBA and 34 MCs (round down to 8 modules) of the BBA(H) can be common modules double counting towards both degree programmes. Assuming Partner's programme also allow at least 6 double-counted modules, this may leave only 14 modules of Major requirements for the BBA, 4 of which count towards the partnering programme's exempted Breadth Modules, thus leaving 10 modules. Similarly, the BBA(H) can be left with 14 modules. (Business students who applied to a Partner's non-Honours programme can be left with 16 BBA(H) modules.)

It is sometimes possible to do a common thesis (final-year project) for the two degree programmes.

A minimum of 60% of the MCs of each set of Major requirements must be letter graded and factored in the CAP of the respective degree, i.e. up to 32 MCs of the BBA and 41 MCs of the BBA(H) can have no letter grades (e.g. credits earned from Student Exchange Programme).

Some modules in the BBA Major requirements can be substituted by Substituting modules or replaced by permitted Recognized modules offered outside the School of Business. Partnering Faculties and Departments may suggest modules for consideration as Substituting or Recognized.

Of the Foundation Modules, ES2002 Business Communication can be replaced by any one of a collection of NUS writing modules, e.g. a USP Writing and Critical Thinking module. Likewise, ST1131A Introduction to Statistics and IT1801 Programming for Business can be respectively replaced by general Statistics (e.g. USP's UQR2207 Decision Making) and Programming (e.g. CS1101C Programming Methodology) modules.

The BBA programme requires 4 Essential Modules (16 MCs) and 2 Restricted Elective Modules (8 MCs). (For students entering NUS from August 2006, 5 Essential Modules, 20 MCs, and no Restricted Elective Module will be required.) A student's selection of Essential Modules may be guided by any optional specialisation. In place of a specialisation, students may take an equal number of Business modules from any area, at the equivalent levels. The BBA(H) programme further requires:

(i) 3 Restricted Elective Modules (12 MCs), with at least 2 modules (8 MCs) at Level-4000.

(ii) 3 Thesis or Replacement Modules (12 MCs):

(1) For students with CAP in modules contributing to the BBA degree of at least 4.0 when accepted for the BBA(H) programme: the 3-module BHT4001 Honours Thesis, or the 2-module BCP4002 Consulting Practicum plus a Level-4000-or-higher Business module.

(2) For students with CAP in modules contributing to the BBA degree of below 4.0 when accepted for the BBA(H) programme: 3 Level-4000-or-higher Business modules.

(e) Unrestricted Electives: Students are exempted from Unrestricted Elective Modules (UEMs). However, if UEMs are taken, these must count towards one of the two degrees.

If there were at least 20 MCs (5 modules) in the partnering programme's exempted UEMs, 5 of the remaining 10 BBA modules can be counted there, leaving 5 modules to be completed with an extra half year of study. Similarly, with at least 4 modules counted towards the partnering programme's exempted UEMs, the 10 modules thus left in the BBA(H) may be completed with only one extra year. (If a Business student who applied to a Partner's non-Honours programme could have 8 double-counted modules, and also could count at least 1 module towards the Partner's exempted UEM, the 15 BBA(H) modules left may be completed with an extra 1.5 years beyond the Partner's 3-year non-Honours programme, i.e., an extra half year beyond BBA(H)).

There can be one less double-counted module for every extra exempted UEM (beyond the 5 or 4) from the Partner's programme. Thus, if Partner's programme had 4 exempted Breadth Modules and 7 exempted UEMs, then there only needs to be 4 and 5 (down from 6 and 8 maximum) common (double-counted) modules for a double degree programme with the BBA and BBA(H) respectively. (With 7 exempted UEMs in the Partner's non-Honours programme, a Business student who applied to the programme only needs 2 double-counted modules.) However, if the Partner's programme only had 3 exempted UEMs (2 and 1 short), then a double degree programme with BBA and BBA(H) will require at least 188 MCs and 204 MCs respectively.

Note that eligible students in the Accounting Specialisation may additionally opt to take 20 extra MCs (5 modules), as UEMs, for voluntary professional accounting qualification, thus delaying graduation by about half a year.

(f) USP Requirements: University Scholars Programme (USP) students must satisfy the same USP requirements as needed for a single-degree programme, i.e. 8 First-Tier Modules (including the compulsory Writing and Critical Thinking module; 32 MCs) and 4 Advanced Modules (16 MCs). USP students are exempted from University Level Requirements.

The Advanced Modules can be drawn from either the Partner's programme or the Business programme, or a combination of both. Some higher-level Business modules may serve as USP Advanced Modules. USP students in the BBA(H) normally count at least 2 Restricted Elective Modules as Advanced Modules.

Any USP Writing and Critical Thinking Module can be double counted as the BBA Foundation Module ES2002 Business Communication. There may be possibilities of double counting other USP modules, e.g. UQR2207 Decision Making could double-count as ST1131A Introduction to Statistics, UBZ3001 Conflict Resolution - Negotiation and Mediation as MNO3313E TIMO: Negotiations & Mediation, UHB2201 Human Relations as a level-2000 module in the Management Specialisation, UQR2209 Game Theory as a level-4000 module in the Marketing Specialisation, and UBZ4001 Management of Intellectual Property as a generic level-4000 Business module.

(g) Modules double counted towards the requirements of both degrees may not be further counted towards a Minor (e.g. Minor in Business).

(h) Degree Requirements: Both the School of Business and the partnering Faculty/Department (and possibly the USP) must be satisfied that all the graduation requirements for their respective degrees (and programme) have been fulfilled.

7. Minimum Residency and Maximum Period of Candidature

To fulfil Residency Requirement, at least 100 MCs of a double Honours degree and 90 MCs of an Honours and a Bachelor's degree must be from NUS modules. Credits earned from modules taken on S/U basis cannot be used to count towards the residency requirements.

The maximum period of candidature will be six years. The two degree programmes must be undertaken and completed within a single continuous candidature period (save for the usual provisions for leave of absence).

8. Computation of CAP

(a) The CAP for both degree programmes will be computed separately and the two CAPs, one each for the respective degree programmes, reflected separately on a single transcript.

BBA's CAP will be computed using at least 92 MCs (80 MCs for Business Major and 12 MCs for University Level Requirements), and BBA(H)'s CAP, using at least 116 MCs (104 MCs for Business and 12 MCs for University). (This last computation is also relevant to a BBA(H) student who put together an ad hoc double-degree programme with another department.)

(b) The process and method for computation of CAP are as follows:

During the registration for modules in each semester, the student must declare which modules he/she wants to use to count towards fulfilment of each of the two degrees. Any changes to the module declarations may only be made during the final semester before graduation, when the student files for graduation, subject to the approval of the partnering Faculty and the School of Business.

The grades from modules (Singapore Studies, GEMs, Faculty requirements or Major requirements) that may be double counted will be used twice to compute the CAP for each of the two degrees.

If any Breadth Module or Unrestricted Elective Module has been taken, the grade obtained will be used to compute the CAP for either one (but not both) of the two degrees, at the discretion of the student. USP students may thus have to decide which USP modules count as Breadth or Unrestricted Elective modules.

Any Honours or Merit classification for BBA will be determined by the computed BBA CAP.

9. Fees

Please consult this link (Q12) for details. Students currently receiving financial aids for their undergraduate programmes should consult their awarding organisations concerning whether any extra fees will be covered. Many NUS-funded scholarships to be awarded to new students in August 2007 shall cover tuition fees for the fifth year in Double Degree programmes.

The Student Financial Aid Unit and the Part-time Appointment Scheme provide financial aid information.

10. Awards, Dean's List, and Conferment of Degrees

The student will be eligible for award of medals and prizes and for inclusion on the Dean's List for both degrees. Two separate degrees will be conferred with the same conferment date, and two degree scrolls issued, one for each degree.
