Creativity, inspiration, eloquence, hard work and a flair for presentations, these are all attributes that are required to excel in business case competitions. NUS Business School students compare favourably even when they are up against international competitors from the very top Business Schools around the world. Here are some of the competitions and Businesss case winnings that our BBA students have won over the years.
Our very own BBA Team - "Aegis Consulting" battled against teams from 20 other universities and emerged 2nd Runner-Up in the HKUST Citi International Case Competition, defeating representatives from top universities like UC Berkeley and Tsinghua University.
The team which comprised of BBA students Kelvin Teo, Vincent Low, Chan Fun Ruey and Lin Xun (from left to right in picture below) took on the challenge of recommending growth strategies for Octopus, a contactless smart card company in Hong Kong. The team proposed to transform Octopus from a leading micro-payment company to a knowledge-based payment one through a hybrid strategy of Enhance (venturing into Real-Time Business Intelligence) and Expand (venturing into the Chinese market).
Kudos as well to the team's dedicated mentors, A/P Tan Soo Jiuan and A/P Nitin Pangakar for their guidance. Well done team! You've done BBA proud!

In the group category, Marcus and his team mates received S$1,200 from the EU Centre in Singapore. The runner-up team led by fellow BBA student Ms Caroline Ng, who is pursuing a concurrent degree in Business Administration (Honours) and Masters in Science (Management), was awarded S$300 in book vouchers.
The annual Discover Europe Fair is organised by the Delegation of the EC to Singapore in partnership with the European Union (EU) Centre in Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, the European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore and the EU Member States. Team “eclect!que” from NUS Business School emerged second-runners-up at the L'Oreal Brandstorm 2009 National Finals held on 20 May. This is the third consecutive year that BBA students from the School clinched the honour of being among the top three teams.
The team, consisting of Ritchie Goenawan, Cheryl Lee and Meryl Lee, spent grueling hours and sleepless nights preparing for the competition and have had their efforts well rewarded through their win. They made it through multiple rounds of selection since December last year, having competed alongside 1,800 students from local universities. Team “eclect!que” also won the “Viewers' Choice” award, after garnering the highest number of votes sent in through mobile-phone text messages.
This year’s added challenge is developing and marketing a brand new product line for L'Oreal - the very first perfume for Maybelline New York. The students had to rely on not only their marketing theories and research, but also their creativity skills and imagination, testing their mettle in both aspects of innovation and conceptual knowledge.
When asked about the strategy for the new proposed perfume, Maybelline All Day All Night, team “eclect!que” explained that it is targeted at urban women on the go. Packaged in sleek bottles with sliders, Maybelline All Day All Night would come in a range of citrus, floral and musk fragrances.
“The judges commended us for our innovative ideas and our directions to align the new perfume with Maybelline's overall branding. Our proposed promotional activities were also based on analysis of the target market, rather than mere gut feel,” explained Ritchie.
Another team from NUS Business School, “MAYHEM”, impressed the judges with their presentation skills to clinch the “Top Presenters – Team” award. Team members, Gao Xiaxia, Justin Zhou and Donna Soh, proposed the idea of having perfume packaged in capsules.
“It was a refreshing experience working on a product for ladies. I had to approach female friends and relatives to get their opinions on the perfume. Now I understand the psyche of females a bit better,” commented Justin.
Team mentor Dr Helen Chai, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies commended the students for their efforts. She added that the students made many personal sacrifices preparing for the competition, as they had to juggle school work and internship as well.
Throughout the entire competition, students worked closely with an international creative agency, McCann Erickson, while being guided by executives from L'Oréal.
