Biography
Mak Yuen Teen is co-Director of the Corporate Governance and Financial Reporting Centre (CGFRC) and associate professor of accounting at the NUS Business School. He holds First Class Honours, Masters and PhD degrees in accounting and finance.
From September 2007 - 2009, Prof Mak took unpaid leave from NUS and was the Regional Research Director for Asia Pacific at Watson Wyatt. Prof. Mak is a fellow of CPA Australia and a core member of the OECD/World Bank's Asian Corporate Governance Roundtable. He is also Chairman of SATA CommHealth, Deputy Chairman of the new National Kidney Foundation, member of the Charity Council, board member of the Financial Industry Dispute Resolution Centre Ltd., and a member of the audit advisory committee of the United Nations Population Fund based in New York. Prof Mak is currently Chair of selection committee for Singapore Corporate Governance Awards, and Chair of the Investor Relations Award Committee and member of the CFO of the Year Award Committee under the Singapore Corporate Awards.
Prof. Mak was a council member of SID from 2000-2005. He was also formerly Deputy Chairman of the Corporate Governance Committee of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS). He was also a member of the Council on Corporate Disclosure and Governance (CCDG) from 2002-2005 and a member of the Corporate Governance Committee which released Singapore’s first Code of Corporate Governance for listed companies.
Prof. Mak has consulted for the OECD, World Bank and other companies, organisations and government bodies. He also conducts training in corporate governance for directors, senior executives and regulators. He has published widely in international academic journals on accounting and corporate governance issues, including Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy and Accounting Horizons. He is an editorial board member of Journal of Accounting and Public Policy and Pacific Accounting Review, and reviewer for many international journals. He is also a frequent commentator in the local and international media on corporate governance and accounting issues and has published extensively in various local and international professional journals. His report on improving the implementation of corporate governance practices in Singapore, commissioned by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Singapore Exchange, was published in June 2007. His book “From Conformance to Performance: Best Corporate Governance Practices for Asian Companies” was published by McGraw-Hill in July 2005, and he has also co-authored two introductory financial accounting textbooks.
Prof. Mak has spoken on corporate governance and accounting issues at various international conferences, including the BusinessWeek CEO Forum and The Economist CFO Roundtable, and other conferences organized by OECD, World Bank, ADB, APEC Business Advisory Council, Singapore Exchange, Singapore Institute of Directors, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Institute of Internal Auditors and Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
